Pacific Northwest Chapter

Donna, Barb (our chef), Lynette

On August 9, our bi-monthly board meeting was held at Barbara Hill’s home in Beaverton. While dining on BBQ, the board created a skeleton calendar for next year’s educational opportunities. We are very excited about the speakers that will be presenting for us! This chapter is truly blessed and grateful for the industry support we receive! Additional details included examining our overall plans for the future and review of IPC events to strengthen our chapter.

On the evening of September 14, we will feature Darren Hitchcock from Multek presenting “Avoidance Issues”. He will discuss the fabricator’s side of the coin and will give hints and tips that will help the fabrication of the physical PCB design. This event will be held at the Beaverton Tektronix campus. For more information and to RSVP, please visit our website. A big “THANKS” to Multek who will also be sponsoring dinner! Meeting will be 5:30 to 8:00 PM.

We want to express our heartfelt loss to the family of our member Michael Wilberding.

Austin Heart of Texas

Our August chapter meeting was our first IPC AHOT Vendor night. We had 10 vendors and 5 technical presentations at our evening meeting from 5:00 till 9:00pm. Our meeting was at Freescale Semiconductor Inc in North Austin. We offered a program after sign-in. Vendors were DDi, Sanmina-Sci, IonDesign, Circuit Pac, MultiLayer, Silicon Hills, Lone Star Circuits, Cadence, Pads, Westak. We had 5 great technical topics: Back Drilling and Via Fill DFM Considerations by Mr. Dana Korf, Sanmina SCI Corp; Lead-Free Solder and 0201 Components by Mr. Curtis Hart, Silicon Hills Design Inc; Design for Manufacturing by Ms. Linda Kutz, WESTAK; Working with Service Bureaus by Mr. Charles Caper, Trilogy Circuits Inc; Rohs and Weee — What Does it All Mean by Mr. Gil White, DDi.

We had an incredible turn out with close to 90 attendees, including chapter members from Austin & Dallas. We had hand-outs explaning what the Designer Council is, the benefits of Membership for first time visitors, and information on Designers Certification. The vendors had technical experts at their booths to offer industry information to the attendees. Overall, we felt the ability for vendors to advertise to their customers was a big contributor to the success of the event.

The chapter offered dinner and drinks in between presentations. The technical presentations were in the Learning Center Auditorium, with vendor displays in the atrium. Door prizes were given away along with a training certificate for 3.5 hours of learning. The event was a huge success for our chapter and Designer Council.

RTP Chapter

The RTP Chapter Steering Committee has been meeting to support the tabletop vendor exhibits and our own booth at the PCB Design Conference East 2006 scheduled to be held September 25-29 at the Marriott Durham Civic Center in Durham, NC. We hope to see many designers at our booth at the show. Check out the UP Media Group website at http://www.pcbeast.com for more information on the show.

San Diego Chapter

We held our August 9th meeting at Pan Dimensional Services, Inc, 4205 Ponderosa Ave., San Diego, CA 92123

All 19 in attendance enjoyed a great Greek dinner courtesy of Mary and Frank Jungman of Pan Dimensional and had a lively discussion of design related assembly issues with boards ranging from the use of fiducials to lead free issues, assembly panel design, rework access for parts, moisture absorption of components, what to do with x-outs on panels — and much more. Also included was a plant tour and a raffle for a camera!

It was a great meeting for all.
