Meet your New Chairman

The IPC is proud to announce Glenn Wells of Multilayer Technology in Irving, Texas, as the new Chairman of the IPC Designers Council Executive Board. Glenn was recently elected for a two year term as Chairman, and we would like to take a moment to share with you his background and highlight some of his past achievements.

Glenn started his PCB design career at Texas Instruments in 1970, and truthfully, it was a very different job market back then. Designers were in such short supply that Texas Instruments and the federal government teamed up to develop an electro-mechanical designer training program internal to Texas Instruments. For eight hours a day over one full year, the designer trainees learned all aspects of electro-mechanical design, shop practices, fabrication, and assembly. The program taught the trainees all the knowledge a top designer would need to know. Math, electronics theory, physics, chemistry, technical writing, ethics, etc., were all a part of the daily class curriculum. Mornings were spent in classrooms studying under college professors and afternoons were spent with senior operators learning manufacturing processes. When you graduated from the program, you were recognized as having a Electro-Mechanical Design Technology degree and compensated accordingly. It was an excellent program, and it produced some great designers.

When Glenn graduated from the program and began working at Texas Instruments, he chose to specialize in PCB design. Through the years, Glenn has worked for and contracted with many companies across the country, but he never forgot the training and practical engineering foundation he received at Texas Instruments. So, after getting a few more college degrees, certificates, and IPC certifications, Glenn developed an associate degree program for printed circuit design at Collin County Community College in Plano, Texas. The program was very successful because people like Glenn, Gary Ferrari and Paul Fleming donated their time, leadership, and expertise. Companies like Veribest, courtesy of Tom Floodeen, provided a two million dollar donation of CAD tools, to which the government matched that donation with cash. For many years this program served as the model for other educational institutions across the country.

Glenn has worked and studied hard to reach the pinnacle of the PCB design profession.

He is one of Printed Circuit Design and Manufacture Magazine’s Top Gun winners, an IPC Certified Master Instructor, and an internationally known lecturer and instructor on printed circuit design topics. He has served and held offices on many IPC committees and is currentlythe Directorof Engineering and Business Development for Multilayer Technology, a premier PCB fabricator,specializing in complex quick-turn prototype boards. With his long list of accomplishments, we are proud to announce Glenn as the new Chair of the IPC Designers Council Executive Board.
